What is Dementia?

Dementia is a disease where problems occur with thinking, memory, and reasoning. This happens when certain areas of the brain are damaged or diseased. The most notable areas of the brain include areas that are used for learning, memory, decision making, and language.

Dementia is also called a neurocognitive disorder. It is a group of symptoms that are caused by multiple conditions.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.  60% to 80% of dementia patients suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. However, there are 50 or more other dementias, some of which are very rare and difficult to diagnose.
